Fans of The Flash will have to get used to the idea: Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin, will soon leave the small screen. Indeed, the American network The CW has made it official that the ninth season will be the last one of the series. More bad news, this ultimate season will be made of only 13 episodes.

Eric Wallace, executive producer and showrunner, said after this announcement: “Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race. So many amazing people have given their talents, time and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.”

Grant Gustin, who had signed on for an additional year in January 2022, was keen to send a message to The Flash fans. In a video posted on Instagram, the actor who plays Barry Allen said that the series has lasted as long as it has because of them and thanked them for it. He also said he was delighted to have been able to play such an iconic character and is happy to be associated with him for the rest of his career.

Since its launch in 2014, The Flash has been one of The CW’s most-watched series and was the first Arrow spin-off to be developed by the network. With its ninth season set to begin filming in September, The Flash becomes the longest-running DC series in CW history.
