Announced as early as 2020, the project for a series adaptation of the Percy Jackson literary saga was finally made official by Disney+ in 2022. More than a year later, fans of Rick Riordan‘s work will finally be able to discover this series directed by Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz. The duo has already worked on Black Sails, Jericho, See and The Old Man.
The first season, which will debut on Disney+ on December 20, 2023, is expected to be faithful to the source material, as Rick Riordan worked closely with the technical team. The author is also behind the scripts for the first two episodes, which he co-wrote with Jon Steinberg.
The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series will follow Percy (Walker Scobell), a 12-year-old demigod who is just beginning to accept his new divine powers when Zeus accuses him of stealing his lightning bolt. With the help of his friends Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), Percy sets out to find the lost bolt and restore order to Olympus.
Also in the cast are Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hermes), Megan Mullally (Alecto aka Mrs. Dodds), Toby Stephens (Poseidon), Virginia Kull (Sally Jackson), Jason Mantzoukas (Dionysos aka Mr. D), Suzanne Cryer (Echidna), Jay Duplass (Hades), Glynn Turman (Chiron aka Mr. Brunner), Adam Copeland (Ares), Olivea Morton (Nancy Bobofit), Charlie Bushnell (Luke Castellan), Dior Goodjohn (Clarisse La Rue), Jessica Parker Kennedy (Medusa), Timm Sharp (Gabe Ugliano) and Timothy Omundson (Hephaestus). The role of Zeus will be played by the late Lance Reddick, who passed away earlier this year.
The first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will premiere on Disney+ on December 20, 2023. The remaining episodes will air weekly.
