An eighth and final season for Outlander, a prequel officially ordered

Outlander, which has been airing on Starz since 2014, will soon begin its final chapter on television. The American network has just confirmed that the series has been renewed for an eighth and final 10-episode season. Season 7, which will air in the summer of 2023, will consist of 16 episodes.

Following the announcement, Kathryn Busby, president original programming at Starz, said: “For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion. But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes…”

While we wait for the new episodes, you can meet the cast of the series at a number of events, including the official The Land Con 5 convention in Paris on 29-30 April 2023.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood: a 10-episode prequel

If the announcement of the end of Outlander is somewhat demoralising for fans of the show, they can take some solace in the official announcement of the prequel about Jamie’s parents. In development since the summer of 2022, Outlander: Blood of My Blood is set for a 10-episode first season under the direction of Matthew B. Roberts.

The series Outlander: Blood of My Blood is described by Matthew B. Roberts as a love story that “will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain”. He added: “The title is a nod to Jamie Fraser’s marriage vow to Claire and there will be several names and faces that Outlander fans will know and recognize. Jamie and Claire’s TV story may be coming to an end with season eight, but Diana is continuing on with their literary journey in her wonderful book series and is working diligently on book ten. With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the Outlander universe, and we cannot wait to continue sharing these stories with our dedicated fans.”
