The love story between ABC and Grey’s Anatomy will not end in 2023. The American network has decided to offer an additional season to its medical series despite the departures of Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and Kelly McCreary (Maggie Pierce).

A season 20 for Grey’s Anatomy

While the departures in recent months, including Ellen Pompeo, who played Meredith Grey, could make one fear the worst, ABC has decided to maintain its confidence in Grey’s Anatomy. The longest prime-time medical series in the history of American television will be offered a season 20 and will improve, a little more, its own record. A decision that will not be surprising given that the series is the best of the channel in the 18-49 age group and that it gathers an average of 10.7 million viewers (live + deferred).

The order of this new salvo of episodes by ABC is coupled with a change of showrunner, since Krista Vernoff leaves the hand to Meg Marinis, who has worked on the series since its launch.

Which characters will be back in season 20?

In season 19, Grey’s Anatomy added new blood to its team and introduced five new interns. Played by Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho and Midori Francis, most of them will be back in season 20 if we believe Deadline.

The American media also notes that many contracts expire at the end of the current season. Are concerned: Kevin McKidd (Owen), Kim Raver (Teddy), Camilla Luddington (Jo) and Caterina Scorsone (Amelia). The ABC network will have to negotiate with each of them to ensure that they will return for Season 20.

As for Ellen Pompeo, Deadline notes that the showrunner change could increase the chances of her returning to Grey’s Anatomy in Season 20, even if only sporadically. Until this is confirmed or not, the character of Meredith Grey will be back on May 18 for the season 19 finale.
