Pennywise, the famous killer clown from Stephen King‘s It, is leaving the movie theaters to take up residence on the small screen. HBO Max has just announced the order for a prequel series called Welcome to Derry.

Set in “the most haunted town in Maine,” as Stephen King reminds us, the series will take place before the events of the movies and will be directed by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti. The duo, who were already working on the 2017 and 2019 feature films, said they were eager to return to Derry and explore the world of It in more depth. Jason Fuchs, co-producer of It: Chapter 2 and involved in the development of the prequel series, also expressed his excitement, calling the project a “dream come true.”

While no synopsis has been released, Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s Head of Original Content, says Welcome to Derry will “expand the IT storytelling canvas and bring fans deeper into the terrifying, mesmerizing town of Derry.”

The press release published by HBO Max does not specify if Bill Skarsgård will lend his features to the character of Pennywise again, but the fans of It must hope so because his performance has been noticed.
