Last November, after the acquisition of the CW by Nexstar, a question was on everyone’s lips: how many of the network’s series will be back for the 2023-2024 season? And the answer is simple: only a few of them will have the chance to be renewed.

A shortened season for Walker

All American won’t be the only returning series on The CW’s new schedule. Apil Blair’s creation, which is guaranteed to return for a Season 6, will be joined next fall by another of the network’s hit series: Walker. A renewal that makes sense as the series is the most watched on The CW, as Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment, The CW Network, recalled: “Over the past three seasons, Walker has become the top performing series on The CW with a passionate fanbase [….] we cannot wait to have Walker back on the schedule.”

While the news is good for fans of the Jared Padalecki show, the renewal comes with some bad news: the fourth season will consist of only 13 episodes. A reduced order that confirms that Nexstar is not looking to invest heavily in the creation of original productions.

Walker: Independence series canceled after one season

While Walker got the green light for another season, its spin-off, Walker: Independence, was not so lucky. The series, set in the late 19th century, was canceled after just one 13-episode season.

The March 2 episode “Let Him Hang” is the finale of the series, which starred Katherine McNamara, Matt Barr, Katie Findlay and Greg Hovanessian, among others.

Walker: Independence may not be the only show to suffer a similar fate as the CW has decided to bet on shows it buys internationally. In recent weeks, the network has acquired the rights to Barons, The Rising, Sullivan’s Crossing and Son of a Critch.
