Which CW series will survive the 2022-2023 season? This is the question that fans of the American channel’s programs are currently asking themselves. And optimism does not seem to be appropriate following the last declarations of Nexstar, the new group owning the CW.

If some series started this year their final season, like The Flash and Riverdale, others have been canceled in recent weeks as was the case for Nancy Drew and Stargirl. Decisions that are notably guided by Nexstar Media Group’s desire to target older viewers and to offer more unscripted content in order to attract a wider audience. A strategy again confirmed by Perry Sook, CEO of Nexstar, in the last few days.

Lee Ann Gliha, Nexstar’s Executive Vice President and CFO, also indicated at the time of unveiling the compagny’s Q3 results: “Over the course of the next year, we’re really working to develop our slate, which will then come online in the 2023-2024 broadcast season. We will have some carryover commitment for the CBS and the WBD programming in that year, but it’s minimal at that point.”

The series still eligible for a spot on The CW’s 2023-2024 grid are: Walker, Walker: Independence, Superman & Lois, All American, All American: Homecoming, The Winchesters and Gotham Knights, which are expected to air mid-season. Note that despite good ratings for their launch, Nexstar has decided not to offer full seasons to Walker: Independence and The Winchesters. Their first seasons will only consist of the initial 13 episode order.

While the showrunners, writers, producers and actors of these series are waiting to know if they will be back for an additional season, Brad Schwartz, the new president of the network, recently said that he did not yet know what would be the fate of each of the series still in the “bubble” and may be canceled or renewed at any time. For this, he confided to The Hollywood Reporter that he will meet with the teams of the series but that he will also study their profitability. Because it is now one of the main points that will be taken into account for the renewals since Nexstar intends to make the CW a lucrative channel from 2025.
