The Academy Awards ceremony, which has become THE reference in the world of cinema, is always an opportunity to discover films that we wouldn’t necessarily have seen if they hadn’t been nominated.

As the 95th edition approaches, we offer you our (subjective) selection of ten Oscar-nominated films to watch from home. If you’d rather make your own selection based on your mood, we suggest you check out the infographic created by ExpressVPN.

5 films nominated for the 2023 Oscars to watch at home

Everything Everywhere All at Once, because it is the UFO of 2022

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert‘s feature film is one of the heavy favorites for the Best Picture Oscar, and it’s easy to see why. Starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, the movie has won almost every award it has been nominated for and could be a big hit at the Oscars.

A mix of comedy, action, drama and utterly absurd sequences, Everything Everywhere All at Once is about a Chinese-American immigrant (Michelle Yeoh) whose life is turned upside down when she learns that she must connect with her multiverse alters in order to save the world and her family.

The Whale: for the return of Brendan Fraser

For several years, Brendan Fraser, best known for his roles in George of the Jungle and in the saga of The Mummy, is back on the front of the stage. A comeback in apotheosis thanks to his performance in the film The Whale by Darren Aronofsky, which allows him to be in the running for the Oscar of Best Actor.

Unrecognizable in The Whale, Brendan Fraser plays Charlie, a reclusive English teacher suffering from morbid obesity who tries to reconnect with his daughter (Sadie Sink).

Turning Red to watch a movie with the whole family

Of course, we could have picked Guillermo del Toro‘s Pinocchio as our favorite for Best Animated Feature, but we decided to go with Disney/Pixar for our family-friendly film.

In 2023, Turning Red, released directly on Disney+, is up for an Oscar. The synopsis: Mei, a young Chinese-Canadian girl, discovers that whenever she is overwhelmed by her emotions, she turns into a red panda. This is very common in her teenage years. How will she deal with these changes? Find out in this animated film by Domee Shi.

Top Gun: Maverick, because it is the sequel to Top Gun (simply)

More than 35 years after the first opus of Top Gun, Tom Cruise made his return in the character of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. And the least we can say is that it worked for him. Joseph Kosinski‘s film, which was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture, became one of the top 5 most successful films in the United States a few months after its release.

In this sequel, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is recruited to train young pilots who have graduated from Top Gun school to carry out a special mission. Among them is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Faced with an uncertain future, haunted by his ghosts, Maverick must confront his worst nightmares in a mission that will require the greatest of sacrifices.

All Quiet on the Western Front to have another vision of the 14-18 war

After winning seven BAFTA Awards, will All Quiet on the Western Front win an Oscar? Based on Erich Maria Remarque‘s pacifist novel, Edward Berger‘s feature film follows Paul (Felix Kammerer) and his comrades from the euphoria of enlistment to the despair of the trenches during World War I.

This 9-time Oscar-nominated Netflix movie offers a fresh take on the Great War, but don’t watch it if you’re already at your worst.

Nostalgia: 5 Oscar-winning films to watch from home

After bringing you five films nominated for the 2023 Oscars, why not take a look at the winners of the Best Picture Oscar? That’s what we’re offering you with the following five movies.

Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, because they made Oscar history

The first three films we suggest are simply the most awarded films in Oscar history. With eleven awards each, they were, in our opinion, must-sees.

The first to do so was Ben-Hur in 1960. For those who don’t know William Wyler‘s feature film starring Charlton Eston and Stephen Boyd, we follow the story of Ben-Hur, a Judas prince who is unjustly sent into slavery by one of his friends, Messala. Ben-Hur vows to do whatever it takes to regain his freedom.

It was not until almost 40 years later that another movie managed to repeat this performance. The movie in question is Titanic, written, produced and directed by James Cameron, also known as the story of the tragic love story between Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio). A must-see movie that became the first film to earn more than a billion dollars worldwide.

The latest film to win 11 Oscars is the final installment of a fantastic trilogy: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. As you will have understood, before you can discover this movie at home, you must have seen the first two opuses: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Adapted from the novel of the same name, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, follows the journey of Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and his companions as they attempt to reach Mordor to destroy the One Ring coveted by Sauron.

West Side Story to discover a classic musical movie

Adapted by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from the musical of the same name, West Side Story is still one of the references when it comes to musical films. And since we are particularly fond of this genre, it was impossible not to mention it among the movies to discover at home. Released in 1961, it was a great success with the public and the critics, and a few months later it went home with 10 Oscars, including those for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (George Chakiris) and Best Supporting Actress (Rita Moreno).

In West Side Story, we follow two rival street gangs, the Jets (European immigrants) and the Sharks (immigrants of Puerto Rican descent), who rule the West Side of New York in the 1950s. Tony, the former leader of the Jets, and Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks, fall in love but are forced to live their love in secret or face reprisals.

If you want to discover a more recent version, Steven Spielberg created his own version in 2021. A new adaptation that won the Golden Globes for Best Comedy or Musical and allowed Ariana DeBose to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Forrest Gump for Tom Hanks’ masterful performance

The latest movie we recommend you watch at home is Forrest Gump. Quickly becoming an American film classic, this status was confirmed in 2011 when the Library of Congress selected it for inclusion in the National Film Registry due to its “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant” interest.

Adapted by Robert Zemeckis from the novel of the same name, Forrest Gump tells the story of Forrest, played as an adult by Tom Hanks, a “simple” man from Alabama who finds himself involved, often in spite of himself, in some of the most significant events in American history.

Tom Hanks‘ performance won him the Oscar for Best Actor, while the film walked away from the ceremony with a total of 6 awards.
