Following in the footsteps of One Piece, another iconic shonen of the last 25 years is about to get its own live-action adaptation. We take a look.

Live-action manga adaptations are still going strong, and after Luffy and his dream of becoming Lord of the Pirates, it’s time for Naruto and his desire to become Hokage. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Masashi Kishimoto‘s famous manga will be getting a live-action adaptation.

Developed by Lionsgate, the project will take the form of a feature-length film written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose credits include Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. In a statement reported by the American media, Adam Fogelson, President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, made no secret of his enthusiasm for the Naruto movie: “This manga classic is beloved by millions of fans all around the world, and Destin has delivered a vision for the movie that we believe will excite that massive fan base as well as those who are new to it.”

The Hollywood Reporter adds that Destin Daniel Cretton won the approval of Masashi Kishimoto during a meeting in Tokyo. “When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto, the manga author says in a statement. He adds: “After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo. In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process.” Is that enough to reassure Naruto fans? The answer will be given in the coming months.
