After a teaser released at the TUDUM 2023 event, Netflix continues to promote its One Piece live-action series. The platform took advantage of One Piece Day to unveil the official trailer for the adaptation of Eiichirō Oda‘s iconic manga.

For this video, Netflix decided to focus on certain iconic moments from the manga, including the execution of Gol D. Roger, which ushers in the great age of piracy. The trailer also confirms that the first season will focus primarily on the “East Blue” arc, in which Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy, sets sail and finds the first members of the Straw Hat crew, namely Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson) and Sanji (Taz Skylar).

The 3-minute video also gives us a glimpse of the main enemies the crew will encounter along the way, including Baggy and Arlong. The design of the latter caused quite a stir after the video was released. We’ll let you be the judge.

Eiichirō Oda is reassuring

In recent years, cult manga adaptations have been criticized for their quality. One Piece creator Eiichirō Oda has reassured fans in a new message posted on social networks.

The author, who was heavily involved in the creation of the One Piece live-action series, stated that “the production agreed to re-shoot because I felt they weren’t good enough to put out into the world. On the other hand, there were also some lines that I thought didn’t feel like Luffy on paper… But when I saw the filmed scenes, I went ‘it works when it’s Inaki performing it as Luffy! As a matter of fact, it works great!!’ (…) There were so many things that had to be done to keep things from looking too unnatural in live action.”

Eiichirō Oda is also aware that fans will notice that “this character is missing or that scene is omitted, or this is different from the manga. But I’m sure they’ll come from a place of love, so I intend to enjoy even those comments!” He adds: “By now I just love this production team and the cast so much that I can’t wait for them to get the acclaim they deserve from everyone around the world. And if by chance people have some gripes, I’ll be there to receive them together!”

The 8-episode first season of One Piece will air on Netflix starting August 31, 2023.
