Alex Kurtzman, executive producer of the Star Trek franchise, had mentioned the project last August to the New York Times and it is now confirmed. The streaming platform Paramount+ will develop Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, a new series centered on the cadets of the academy.

This project could be given to Gaia Violo (Absentia) according to information from Deadline. It is not specified if the series will be based on the eponymous comics. Sources close to the project hope that the series will enter production by next year. Filming could begin after Section 31 shooting, the Star Trek series starring Michelle Yeoh.

Explaining the many Star Trek projects in development, including this one, Alex Kurtzman said, “We have to think several years out. We’re thinking about knowing we’ll want new shows on the air two or three years from now so we have to start planning those now. There’s a bunch of things in development now that are starting to take shape and we’re super excited about it.”
