Paramount+ is developing a series based on Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice on Netflix) is writing and directing the pilot.
The famous role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons was adapted for the big screen in the 2000s to moderate success, followed by two lesser-known sequels. An animated series of 27 episodes also aired from 1983 to 1985.
A co-production between Paramount Pictures and eOne, the Dungeons & Dragons series will join Halo, the video game adaptation that is one of the most popular series on the Paramount+ platform. The eight-episode series is expected to follow the popular universe of humans, elves, orcs, dwarves, dragons and other fantasy creatures through adventures and treasure hunts.
Creating a whole universe in film and TV
eOne and Hasbro aim to develop a Dungeons & Dragons universe by creating a movie and TV franchise. This begins with their new movie “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor of Thieves” starring Chris Pine, scheduled for release in March 2023.
The Dungeons & Dragons universe was developed in the late 1970s through various sets and game books and has been a consistent success, with over 50 million fans having played D&D since its launch 49 years ago.
