On the occasion of the ATX TV…from the Couch virtual festival, Caroline Dries discussed the decision of the production to introduce a new character rather than re-casting the one played by Ruby Rose. Let’s take a look.

As announced a few weeks ago, Ruby Rose will no longer play the role of Kate Kane in Batwoman’s season 2. The actress has decided to leave the series after just one season. Although there were plans to give the role of Kate Kane to a new actress, the production decided to introduce a new character named Ryan Wilder. Caroline Dries, creator of the series, discussed this decision during the ATX TV…from the Couch virtual convention.

“To be honest with you, I did consider the soap opera version for a hot minute, selfishly because we already had a couple of episodes written, and transition-wise it would be seamless,” said Dries. After discussing with Greg Berlanti, Executive Producer of the Arrowverse, it was decided that a new character would be introduced to “respect everything that Ruby put into the Kate Kane character”.

Caroline Dries adds: “I’m inventing a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she will take on the mantle and is completely maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.”

For the record, this new character named Ryan Wilder is a nice, messy, clumsy, mid-20s young woman who is the exact opposite of Kate Kane. Former drug addict and capable of killing someone with her bare hands. Openly lesbian, she is an athletic, raw, passionate and fallible woman. She is also far from the stereotypes of the all-American hero. For the moment, no actress has been chosen to play this new character.

Season 2 of Batwoman will be available on the American channel The CW at the beginning of 2021.
