The Weeknd will leave music studios for a while to go on film sets. According to Deadline, the Canadian singer, whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, will produce, write and star in the series The Idol.

Scheduled to air on HBO, the series co-created with Sam Levinson (Euphoria) and Reza Fahim will follow a pop singer who begins a romance with an enigmatic Los Angeles club owner who turns out to be the leader of a secret cult. The Weeknd is expected to play the male lead role.

Joseph Epstein will be the showrunner and writer of The Idol. He will be assisted in the writing by The Weeknd – who previously wrote an episode of American Dad – and Mary Laws (Preacher, Monsterland).
