The singer and actress Olivia Newton-John, best known for her role as Sandy in Grease, died Monday at the age of 73. The cause of her death was not revealed, but she had been battling cancer for many years.

In a statement, her husband, John Easterling, said: “Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. […] Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer.”

Olivia Newton-John achieved success in the 1970s and 1980s through her music, with her songs, “Physical,” “Let Me Be There” and “I Honestly Love You” winning three Grammys.

In 1978, it is in a movie that she breaks the screen by playing the role of Sandy in Grease alongside John Travolta. The latter, who had since remained friends with the actress and singer, paid tribute to her on Instagram: “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”
