The rumour was spreading for a few days and finally got confirmed by Netflix: Santa Clarita Diet is cancelled. The comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant ends with a third season acclaimed by the public and which leaves many unanswered questions. Fans have already begun to take action through the #SaveSantaClaritaDiet hashtag. An operation that will have little chance of succeeding as the One Day at a Time fans can testify.

In a statement published by Deadline, the streaming giant said: “The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix”. Meanwhile, Victor Fresco and Tracy Katsky thanked Netflix who gave a chance “to this odd show”. “For that, we will always be grateful. They were supportive, ever positive, and appreciative of our work. Until about noon today”. With the hint of black humour well known in the series, they added: “Still, they were just one phone call away from being a perfect studio. Not bad. Everything ends. This was a thing. And so it ended”.

Timothy Olyphant who interprets Joel Hammond, also played the humour card after the announcement: “I loved working on this show. I’m going to continue coming in and doing scenes. If they don’t want to film it, that’s up to them”. As for Drew Barrymore, she paid tribute to her character: “Of all of the characters I’ve ever been, Sheila Hammond is one of my favourites. She and Joel were an amazing couple, who had shared goals. And I am lucky to have worked alongside Tim Olyphant. It was an honour to get to do something so delightful. Sheila lives forever in me. And I am grateful to Victor Fresco, who created a world so unique”.
