A date and a teaser for The Walking Dead: Dead City

If The Walking Dead series ended in 2022, and Fear The Walking Dead will soon start its last season, AMC is not done with the zombie apocalypse. The American network has indeed ordered several spin-offs, starting with The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Initially named Isle of the Dead, this series directed by Eli Jorné will be available from June 18, 2023 on AMC. The six-episode series will follow Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they team up to rescue Hershel, Maggie’s son held captive in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long cut off from the mainland. An unlikely team, given that Negan is responsible for the death of Maggie’s husband Glenn (Steven Yeun).

Present at the WonderCon 2023 event, Eli Jorné, showrunner of the series, said: “At the center of it all is still the next chapter in the story of Maggie and Negan. So, in that sense, it’s about grief and trauma and loss on both sides. And how do you navigate that? […] How does Maggie every day look at Negan’s face and remember what he did to the love of her life? So, that’s still a huge part of the show. For anybody who’s watched The Walking Dead all these years and connected to these characters, we’re just continuing the story, and evolving it, and growing it, and deepening it in a whole new landscape.”

The showrunner also promises a whole new experience with The Walking Dead: Dead City: “It’s The Walking Dead like we’ve never seen it before. We haven’t really lived in a city like this. It’s New York, there’s skyscrapers up to the sky and a million and a half walkers. And for characters like Maggie and Negan, who’ve been running through the woods for a long time, it’s just a whole new world that’s just extremely claustrophobic, scary, and also, as you’ll discover, has pockets of survivors, you’ll get to see all the strange new ways they live in the apocalypse, it’s definitely like nothing you’ve seen before.”
