Scheduled to begin airing in June, Season 7 of Outlander will be filled with new faces. Among them, Denzell Hunter, a character particularly appreciated by the readers and linked to the Fraser family and to Lord John Grey. His interpreter, Joey Phillips, who was in Paris for an official Outlander convention, took the opportunity to talk about his role and his arrival in the series.
A warm welcome from the cast
Nervous is the word Joey Phillips used to describe his first feeling when he found out he was joining Outlander, a show whose success is no longer to be proven. But that nervousness disappeared on the first day of filming, he confided at The Land Con 5 event. The reason? The cast and crew made him feel at home.
The actor who plays Denzell Hunter, who is also an accomplished stage actor, added that it was very easy to work with the entire cast of Outlander and that he felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to film with them over the past few months.
Denzell Hunter: a complex character
When asked about his character, Joey Phillips said that he has to be careful what he can say. No question for him to spoil any scene before the arrival of season 7 on Netflix.
Nevertheless, the actor gave a description of Denzell Hunter, also known as Denny. A Quaker and a surgeon, he truly believes in freedom, which he says is a gift from God. While he wanted to join the revolutionary army to fight for independence and use his skills to help others, that desire clashed with his beliefs. Indeed, Quakers are opposed to violence and war.
Joey Phillips adds that Denny is a kind person, very patient and understanding. He is also very protective of his sister Rachel and wants only the best for her. The latter will be played by actress Izzy Meikle-Small, previously seen in Ripper Street and Snow White and the Huntsman.
While Outlander Season 7 will be one of the most important television experiences of Joey Phillips‘ early career, the actor is well aware of the importance of his character and the expectations fans have of him. That’s why he confided that he’s preparing for all the “craziness” that will surround the upcoming season’s launch.
As a reminder, the first eight episodes of Outlander‘s seventh season will air every Friday beginning June 16, 2023. The remaining 8 episodes will air on Starz in 2024.
