Following the success of the novels, webtoon, and anime—which won nine awards at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards—Solo Leveling is getting its own live-action series. Netflix has confirmed the production of a series starring actor Byeon Woo-seok, known for his roles in Lovely Runner and Strong Woman Kang Nam Soon.
The story of Solo Leveling plunges us into a world where supernatural portals regularly open, linking our reality to dungeons filled with fearsome creatures. To protect humanity, certain individuals have developed powers and become hunters. Sung Jin-Woo (played by Byeon Woo-seok) is considered the weakest hunter, but he miraculously survives a nightmarish mission that should have cost him his life. When he wakes up, he discovers that he has been chosen by a mysterious “System” and that he now has a unique ability that allows him to evolve and gain power like in a video game. From then on, he embarks on a spectacular ascent, determined to unlock the secrets of his new powers and the dungeons. He gradually becomes humanity’s last bastion in the face of increasingly dangerous threats.
In its press release, Netflix promises “vivid characters, dynamic action sequences, and exhilarating quests” which will be brought to life by “a world-class global VFX team.” The platform also announced dungeons with “fantastical dungeons and uniquely powerful monsters”, aiming to set a new standard for live-action adaptations. To bring this universe to life, Netflix entrusted the direction to Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, who previously collaborated on Ashfall.
