Prime Video cancels Countdown and Butterfly after one season

Prime Video has decided not to renew Countdown and Butterfly, two series produced by Amazon MGM Studios and broadcast earlier this year. These two new shows, starring Jensen Ackles and Daniel Dae Kim, launched on June 25 and August 13, 2025, respectively, and will not be getting a second season.

Countdown, created by Derek Haas, followed Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles), an LAPD officer recruited by a special unit to track down the killer of a Department of Homeland Security agent. The investigation quickly took a darker turn, revealing a vast conspiracy and a race against time to save Los Angeles. The cast included Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), Jessica Camacho (All Rise), Violett Beane (God Friended Me), Uli Latukefu (Young Rock), Elliot Knight (The Boys), and Bogdan Yasinski (Bosch: Legacy).

After Prime Video made its decision, Jensen Ackles shared his disappointment on social media: “As some of you may have seen already, Countdown did not get picked up for another season. Amazon’s gonna let it go. And it’s a bummer, because I had such an amazing time making that show. I had an absolute blast with the cast and the crew.”

Butterfly, created by Steph Cha and Ken Woodruff, was a spy thriller centered on David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim), a former American agent living in South Korea whose past comes back to haunt him in explosive fashion. He finds himself hunted by Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a young sociopathic agent tasked with killing him and Caddis, the sinister organization she works for. The cast also included Piper Perabo (Yellowstone), Louis Landau (Rivals), Kim Ji-hoon (Rich Family’s Son), Kim Tae-hee (Hi Bye, Mama!), Charles Parnell (Top Gun: Maverick), and Sean Dulake (Dramaworld).

Despite a fairly positive reception and a place in Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming programs, these series failed to convince Amazon to continue the adventure. Would you have liked to see a second season of Countdown or Butterfly? Let us know in the comments.
