A new spin-off is in the works for the iconic CBS series NCIS. After developing spin-off series set in various U.S. cities, the American network has decided to begin production on an NCIS prequel that will revisit the youth of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Set in 1991, NCIS: Origins will focus on young Gibbs, a new agent in the Camp Pendleton office, who finds his place in a motley crew led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. We’ll learn a bit more about the two men’s past, even though it was briefly covered in the original series.

Mark Harmon, who played Gibbs for 19 seasons, will serve as executive producer and narrator. Sean Harmon, his son, will also be an executive producer, along with Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North. The latter, who will also serve as showrunners, know the NCIS universe inside and out, having written numerous episodes of the original series. In a statement, they said: “We’re thrilled to be bringing this new chapter to life along with Mark and Sean Harmon. This really is the making of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And even the most dedicated NCIS fans will discover that they don’t know the whole story.”

For their part, CBS, through the voice of Amy Reisenbach, said they were “elated and honored to continue the expansion of the ‘NCIS’ universe in such a unique and unexpected way. Viewers can look forward to Mark Harmon returning to CBS to narrate the complex and mysterious backstory of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years in ‘NCIS: Origins,’ which will build on the rich legacy of this character while reintroducing fan-favorite characters and meeting new ones.”

NCIS: Origins is scheduled to air on CBS during the 2024-2025 season. We’ll let you know as soon as a more specific date is announced.
