A few days after unveiling its 2026–2027 schedule, ABC has given the green light to a new series for next season. As revealed by Deadline, the American network has decided to commission a spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy, its long-running medical drama, which will begin its 23rd season in the fall of 2026.
This new series, co-created by Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, and Meg Marinis, a longtime producer of the original series and showrunner since 2024, will follow the staff of a medical center located in a rural area of West Texas, where the facility serves as the last resort for medical care before miles of desert.
Following this official announcement from ABC, Meg Marinis did not hide her enthusiasm: “I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
While it’s not yet clear how this new series will be connected to Grey’s Anatomy, or whether characters from the original series will make appearances, it’s worth noting that Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, will serve as an executive producer. A role she already has in Grey’s Anatomy and also had in Station 19, another spin-off of the medical drama.
