A few days after making the cancellations of Grand Crew and Young Rock official, NBC has decided to send another of its comedies packing.
Airing since 2001 on the American network, American Auto will not have had as many seasons as Superstore, another of Justin Spitzer‘s creations airing on NBC between 2015 and 2021. After just two seasons, the series featuring the employees of a Detroit car manufacturing company was forced to shut down. With an average of 2 million viewers, American Auto had similar ratings to Lopez vs Lopez, a series that was granted an additional season.
In a tweet posted after the announcement was made official, Ana Gasteyer, who plays Katherine Hastings, said she “really loved this opportunity – everyone on the creative team, the writers, the crew and of course, the ensemble made magic”. The cast also includes Harriet Dyer (Sadie Ryan), Jon Barinholtz (Wesley Payne), Tye White (Jack Fordham), Michael Benjamin Washington (Cyrus Knight), Humphrey Ker (Elliot Chisholm) and X Mayo (Dori Ovens).

Shortly after the cancellation of American Auto, the series received a strong endorsement: Mark Hamill. The actor, who plays Luke Skylwalker in Star Wars, paid a heartfelt tribute to the NBC comedy: “One of my favorite comedies in years was smart, well written & expertly performed by a brilliant ensemble cast. Oh- one more thing: it was always VERY FUNNY. Fingers crossed it gets picked up elsewhere like Brooklyn 99 & Taxi.”

While American Auto fans hope that Mark Hamill‘s wish will be granted, it’s worth noting that a new Justin Spitzer creation will air on NBC in 2023. Called St. Denis Medical, the series follows the doctors and nurses at an underfunded, understaffed hospital in Oregon as they do their best to care for patients while staying sane. The cast includes Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Allison Tolman (Fargo), Josh Lawson (House of Lies), Kahyun Kim (American Gods) and Mekki Leeper (The Sex Lives of College Girls).
