As The Lord of the Rings continues its adventure on the small screen with the second season of the Amazon Prime Video series, Warner Bros. Picture has just announced that the universe imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien will also return to the big screen.
The studio said that these new films are made possible thanks to an agreement with Embracer, which owns all rights to J.R.R. Tolkien‘s work. New Line Cinema, a division of Warner that produced the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, is also involved in the projects.
Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, heads of Warner Bros. Pictures, said in a statement: “Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings on the big screen. The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans.” But that’s not all, they add: “for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”
With this announcement, The Lord of the Rings fans were left wondering if Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens would be back at the helm of these new films. At this time, that has not been confirmed, but they have indicated in a statement that Warner Bros. and Embracer have kept them informed every step of the way. They say they “We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
