Soeurs Jumelles: a festival mixing image and music

Today, I would like to talk about a new, fresh festival named Soeurs Jumelles. Their  second edition in Rochefort (Charente- Maritimes) last month was held on June 22-25th.

Soeurs Jumelles Festival has a unique vibe. Why? because it gathers professionals and attendees during a few days in one place. A kind of festival that meets music within the screen. More precisely, it’s the importance of music within the film industry. How one can’t do without the other. A meeting between musicians and filmmakers through the eyes of an audience.

It is based on human and talents. Focusing on the importance of cultural aspects and actions within our society. As well as on an educational level, helping students from music and film schools meet professionals. They do ask questions and brainstorm together, bringing up ideas and solutions to ongoing issues in the industry such as equality, women empowerment and more.

Speaking of women empowerment, one of the main values that this festival has is equality.

In France, only 3% of the female musicians involved are recognized for their talent in the film industry. This has to change. This is  why this year, they dedicated one day of the festival to this cause with Fondation des Femmes’s (Feminism association) help. This day aimed at changing people’s minds and finding solutions to acknowledge this issue in order to find solutions supported by surveys and studies that have been conducted to prove the lack of women’s creativity and reconation into the business.

Why Rochefort? This city was chosen because it’s where one of the most popular french musical comedies has taken place. A movie called Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (Catherine Deneuve et Françoise Dorléac) directed by Jacques Demy. A tribute to which Soeurs Jumelles wanted to honor and have a strong and intimate connection to why this festival was created in the first place.

Soeurs Jumelles was originally created by French actress Julie Gayet but she also manage the festival with Delphine Paul, Eric Debegue and Hélène Girault

What you can do during the festival:

  • Debates: Exchanging opinions and ideas between professionals and institutions on ongoing actual themes.
  • Artists Conversations: Going behind the scenes of artists and their talents
  • Projections: Premiere of movie/documentary with the cast and crew upon availability,
  •  Shows that ties live music and screenplay.

I’ve had the pleasure to go to their first edition which I had a blast with. It’s unique, powerful, important, fun and where you can learn lots of things in both industries. Also Rochefort is a very gentle and charming city. Lots to do around. Great for family and friends.

Third edition to be announced soon.
