Launched on Friday, April 23 on Netflix, the series Shadow and Bone, an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo‘s work, has everything to seduce fantasy fans. But a question arises: is a season 2 possible for Shadow and Bone? First elements of answer with Roster Con.
What is Shadow and Bone about?
In this adaptation by Eric Heisserer, we follow Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphan who has the power to free her country from the monstrous Shadow Fold. To do this, she will leave everything she knows to join a magical army of elite soldiers called Grisha. But as she struggles to master her powers, she discovers that in this fantasy world, the line between friend and enemy is thin and appearances are deceiving.
The eight-episode first season features Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Julian Kostov (Fedyor Kaminsky), Sujaya Dasgupta (Zoya) and Ben Barnes (General Kirigan).
Has the series already been renewed by Netflix for a season 2?
If Netflix has not yet officially announced a possible season 2 of Shadow and Bone, the site What’s On Netflix indicates in an article dated from March 16, 2021 that the series would have already been renewed behind the scenes. The information would have been revealed to them by an internal source who had already confirmed the renewals of other series even before the official announcement of the platform among which Ozark, Fate: The Winx Saga, Warrior Nun and The Umbrella Academy.
In addition, last March, Eric Heisserer, showrunner of the series, had told Collider to have a plan for three seasons for Shadow and Bone and that’s what he had presented to Netflix. Enough to hope a little more for a renewal of the series. For Decider, he even mentionned possible spin-offs: “there’s so many characters that are charismatic and talented and charming and also full of trauma that they could absolutely be the protagonists of their own series.”
Another positive signal: the first reviews from the press but also from the public are very good.
Usually, Netflix announces the cancellation or renewal of a series between 3 and 6 weeks after the broadcast of the episodes of the season concerned. If we follow this logic, Netflix could decide on a new season at best by mid-May. Let’s hope for all Shadow and Bone fans that the renewal is announced even sooner so we can get back to the Grishaverse quickly.
