It is now official, the horrific show Penny Dreadful: City of Angels won’t have a season two. The misadventures of Inspector Tiago Vega are stopping after only ten episodes, to the dismay of the international fans. The disappointment is even bigger for Dominic Sherwood’s admirers who once again endure the cancellation of a show, like Shadowhunters in 2018. If the spin-off did not seduce the supporters of the first version where vampires, werewolves, and witches were evolving together, even with the return of Rory Kinnear, Showtime’s announcement is slightly bitter to the new spectators.

Where to watch Penny Dreadful: City of Angels?

Shot by John Logan, nominated several times for the Oscars, Penny Dreadful CoA brings a modern criticism on our society while breaking away from our reality. Sexism, racism, religion, and games of power in Los Angeles City facing the slow advent of fascism in Europe, so many topics that painfully resonate with our actual lives, driven by the amazing Natalie Dormer who pleased us with four characters all as different and complex as each other.

But the show did not limit itself to well-known actors such as Natalie or Nathan Lane (Blacklist, Snow-White). Jonathan Nieves, who plays Mateo Vegas, finally has the chance to show his talent after a few secondary roles as in Shameless or Grey’s Anatomy. Playing a teenager torn apart by his family and his hate for an oppressive society, Jonathan offers us an incredibly moving interpretation, making many of us cry.

However, good news arrived these last days with the announcement of the sale of season one DVD on Amazon. This is not erasing the upsetting cancellation but fans will at least be able to rewatch their favorites episodes again and again, even if they won’t discover the end of Tiago and his relatives story.
