Saved from cancellation by NBC last year, Magnum P.I., the reboot of the iconic ’80s series, will not be granted another miracle and will end at the end of its fifth season. The final episodes are expected to air in 2024.

Despite still solid ratings, Magnum P.I. is one of the collateral victims of the writers’ strike, as Deadline explains. With the actors’ contracts set to expire on June 30, NBC had to decide the fate of the show, and three scenarios were possible: renew Magnum P.I. for a sixth season, extend the options on the actors’ contracts, or cancel the show. In the end, the network chose the latter option, as the ongoing writers’ strike in Hollywood made it impossible to predict when new episodes would be shot.

Following the announcement, the show’s cast and writers thanked Magnum P.I. fans for their support over five seasons.

What is the Magnum P.I. series about?

The series, which debuted on CBS in 2018 and was picked up by NBC in 2022, follows Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez), a decorated officer in the Navy SEALs who decides to switch jobs and use his skills to become a detective in Hawaii. Housed on the estate of the wealthy Robin Master, he shares the premises with Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks), an ex-member of MI6 and the estate’s butler, who makes sure Magnum doesn’t abuse her boss’s generosity.

As for his career as a private investigator, Magnum can count on Kumu (Amy Hill), Rick (Zachary Knighton) and TC (Stephen Hill), two of his former brothers-in-arms, to help him with his cases. During his investigations, he regularly crosses paths with Gordon Katsumoto (Tim Kang), a member of the Hawaiian police force who disapproves of his methods.
