While the list of contenders for the role of Supergirl was whittled down to three names – Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg DonnellyJames Gunn has officially revealed the identity of the actress who will portray the DC Universe heroine. Kara Zor-El will now take the form of Milly Alcock, the actress who broke new ground in 2022 with her role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in the House of the Dragon series.

On Instagram, James Gunn said, “Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely and Ana Nogueira.

According to Deadline, Milly Alcock will take on the role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in a DC Studios project before getting her own solo movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It’s not clear if the movie introducing the character will be Superman Legacy, which focuses on Clark Kent/Superman, Kara’s cousin.

The feature film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the eponymous comic books, is set to depict a version of Supergirl that audiences aren’t used to, as James Gunn said when the project was made official: “We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
