It seems like not a week goes by without Netflix announcing the start of production on a new K-drama. After announcing Lovestruck, Perfect Job, True Lessons, and Scandals, the streaming platform revealed that it is working on The Rat, an adaptation of the webtoon Field Mouse. The webtoon is inspired by a Korean folktale in which a rat is transformed into a human by consuming clipped fingernails.
In this new South Korean series, Netflix subscribers will follow Moon-jae (Ryu Jun-yeol, The 8 Show), a sociophobic novelist leading a reclusive existence whose life is turned upside down when he can no longer unlock his phone with his fingerprint. As if that weren’t enough, his only friend disappears without a trace. He soon realizes that a mysterious “Rat” has taken over his identity, his name and his accounts. Stripped of everything, he has only one goal: to find the man who stole his life.
To achieve this, he enlists the help of No-ja, a tenacious former loan shark turned private detective, played by Sul Kyung-gu (Hyper Knife). The latter had once hunted Moon-jae down for an unpaid debt, and never expected to see him, three years later, seeking his help. Initially motivated by money, No-ja gradually becomes caught up in this obscure and dangerous hunt.
The two heroes of The Rat, Ryu Jun-yeol and Sul Kyung-gu, will be directed by Kim Hong-sun (Dear Hongrang, Liar Game), and the series’ script is by Lee Jae-gon, known for Special Affairs Team TEN and A Model Family. The platform claims that this duo will provide viewers with a puzzling, high-quality series. However, before we can confirm this, we’ll have to be patient, as production has only just begun.
