It was one of the most anticipated series of 2023 and so far, The Last of Us does not disappoint. Whether fans of the video game or newcomers to this post-apocalyptic universe, everyone seems to be seduced by the adaptation by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann, creator of The Last of Us franchise. This is evidenced by the 9.3/10 audience rating on IMDB and the 96% score the series has received on Rotten Tomatoes.
These are very positive indicators for HBO, on top of the excellent launch figures for The Last of Us. In fact, the series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey has signed the second best start of HBO after House of the Dragon, and the number of viewers who have seen the first episode on American soil has now exceeded 22 million. No wonder that the American network quickly made the order for a second season official.
In a statement sent by HBO, Francesca Orsi, the network’s president of drama series and movies, said that she was eager to see how the team of The Last of Us would outdo themselves for season 2. Neil Druckmann, meanwhile, said he was “humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey.”
As a reminder, The Last of Us series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor hired to get Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. A particularly brutal journey across the United States begins, with one’s survival depending on the other’s. The cast also includes Gabriel Luna, Jeffrey Pierce, Phillip A. Kovats, Merle Dandridge, Anna Torv and Lamar Johnson.
Season one episodes of The Last of Us are available on HBO every Sunday night until March 12, 2023.
