After a brief detour with NCIS: Tony & Ziva—which was ultimately canceled after just one season by Paramount+—Michael Weatherly is set to reprise his role as Tony DiNozzo. CBS has announced that the actor will reprise the role that first brought him to the public’s attention on NCIS, as part of a story arc that will run throughout the entire 24th season.
A key figure in the first thirteen seasons of the series created by Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill, Michael Weatherly had already made a brief return in an episode of Season 21. This time, he will play a much more significant role within the team, marking one of the major events of this new season.
This return will notably allow the show to revisit one of the most beloved dynamics from the early years of NCIS: the partnership between Tony DiNozzo and Timothy McGee. Played by Sean Murray, McGee is now the only actor who has been in the main credits since the series’ debut in 2003. The reunion between the two agents promises to reignite a chemistry that has greatly contributed to the series’ success.
Season 24 of NCIS will air every Tuesday on CBS starting this fall. Alongside Michael Weatherly and Sean Murray, viewers will also see Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law, and Gary Cole.
One question remains, however: Will Tony DiNozzo’s return also lead to the return of Ziva David, played by Cote de Pablo? While CBS has not yet confirmed anything on this matter, Tony’s presence throughout Season 24 is sure to reignite speculation about Ziva’s possible appearance in this new batch of NCIS episodes.
