More than 20 years after the release of Gladiator, Ridley Scott has decided to work on the sequel of his Oscar-winning peplum. And he can count on a nice cast if we believe the various announcements made by the American media.

While Russell Crowe is not attached to the project, Ridley Scott will be able to count on one of the rising stars of Hollywood to play his main character: Paul Mescal. Known for his role in the series Normal People and nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Aftersun, the actor will play Lucius, the nephew of Commodus and son of Lucilla. The latter will be played, as in the first opus, by Connie Nielsen.

Two other actors who have been in the news in recent months are also expected to be cast: Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) and Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian). The former will play the Emperor Caracalla, while the latter will play an as-yet-unknown role.

According to American media reports, three more actors are attached to Gladiator 2. Djimon Hounsou is said to reprise his role as Juba, while Barry Keoghan could play the emperor Geta. Finally, Denzel Washington would also appear in the credits of the sequel in a role that is being kept secret, according to Deadline.

Gladiator 2, whose cast is growing by the week, is scheduled for release in late 2024.
