As Outlander comes to an end, Richard Rankin, one of the stars of the series, has been cast in the series Rebus.

Richard Rankin, best known for his role as Roger in Outlander, will soon lend his features to a new character. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Scottish actor will play detective John Rebus in the series adaptation of Ian Rankin‘s work.

Developed by the Viaplay platform, the Rebus series will focus on 40-year-old John Rebus (Richard Rankin), who finds himself at a psychological crossroads after a run-in with a notorious Edinburgh gangster. Faced with a department increasingly run by technocrats, involved in a toxic affair he knows he must end, and all but eclipsed in his daughter’s life by his ex-wife’s rich new husband, Rebus begins to wonder if he still has a role to play – either as a family man or as a policeman.

Richard Rankin said he was “thrilled to be taking on the role of Rebus.” He added: “I’m a big fan of the series and Sir Ian Rankin. I feel very lucky to be given the honor of bringing such an iconic Scottish character back to TV screens and will give all I have to do it justice”.

The series Rebus, expected to be released on Viaplay in 2024, will consist of 6 episodes. The scripts will be signed by Gregory Burke (’71) and according to the Hollywood Reporter, filming will begin in Scotland in April 2023.
