Comic books have inspired video games since the early days of gaming. Here is a look at five of the most interesting comic/game crossovers.

The Darkness

The American comic book series The Darkness follows a New York Mafioso who inherits the curse of the cosmic entity known as the Darkness when he turns 21. The video game adaptation of the comic book is great fun. The first-person shooter, released in 2007, will keep you on the edge of your seat for hours.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

Any fan of DC Comics will love the fighting video game Injustice: Gods Among Us. You can select your playable character from a wide range of famous superheroes and villains from the DC Universe before taking on a series of comic book opponents to knock them out one by one. The story of Injustice: Gods Among Us is set in a parallel universe where Superman has become a tyrant. It is up to Batman and other superheroes to stop Superman’s evil reign. The dozens of characters featured in this thrilling game include Joker, Aquaman, Catwoman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman. Interestingly, although Wonder Woman has starred in recent successful movies and appeared in various games, including DC Universe Online, Justice League Heroes, and the Wonder Woman slot game that you can play at a US, UK, or Canadian online casino, the Princess of the Amazons has never starred in her own video game.

Asterix & Obelix XXL

Although the Gaulish warrior Asterix and his boar-eating sidekick Obelix have never become as famous in America, they have remained as Europe’s reigning comic book heroes for decades, having appeared in thirty-five books and various other media, including movies and video games. There have been dozens of Asterix video games since Atari’s eponymous title in 1983. But the best is one of the most recent. Set in the year 50 BC, the two Gauls battle the Romans with the superhuman strength they gain from a magic potion. The action-adventure game Asterix & Obelix XXL was first released in 2003, but a remastered version with new game modes, reworked gameplay animations, and other new features, was released in October 2020.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead video game is largely considered to be one of the best video games ever made. It is based on the comic book series of the same name, created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. The Walking Dead comic, which debuted in 2003, focuses on a Kentucky deputy who awakes from a coma to find he is in the middle of a state-wide quarantine due to a zombie apocalypse. The comic book series became a highly successful television series in 2010. Two years later, in 2012, the video game was launched. Consisting of five episodes, The Walking Dead game is set in the same fictional world as the comic book and takes place shortly after the zombies take over Georgia.

Spider-Man

Marvel’s Spider-Man needs no introduction. The web-shooting, wall-climbing, young-superhero is one of the most famous characters on the planet. So, it is not surprising to learn that there have been literally dozens of Spidey games over the years, beginning with the 1982 Atari game Spider-Man. What may be more surprising is many of the Spider-Man games simply suck. When the 2018 Spider-Man game by Insomniac Games came out, it was a breath of fresh air. Many critics and reviewers called it one of the best superhero video games ever made. The plot sees the superhuman crime lord Mister Negative devising a plot to take over the criminal underworld of New York. It is up to Spider-Man to stop him.
