Christopher Nolan has made a name for himself as one of the most ambitious directors in Hollywood. Ever since his breakthrough with Memento in 2000, he has made a career out of shocking audiences with non-linear narratives and surprising elements. If there’s a filmmaker who’s most likely to make you think, “What the….?” – it’s Nolan.
Now, the iconic visionary is turning his attention to one of the oldest stories of all time – The Odyssey. The question is, will he be faithful to Homer’s famous work, or will he turn the whole thing on its head and include some mindboggling sci-fi elements?
Greek Mythology is Open to Interpretation
The great thing about Greek mythology is that it can be reworked and adapted in various ways. Indeed, the famous stories became what they are through various retellings with embellishments and alterations thousands of years ago.
Now, Greek mythology remains strong in the mainstream, with many people having some knowledge of the characters. For example, at the end of Inception, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dominick Cobb, puts down the spinning top to check that he’s in reality. The film closes on it still spinning, and audiences have to decide whether he’s still in the dream or not.
There are certain instances in Nolan’s films where viewers are left pondering what happened for days. The ending of Interstellar is one of the most talked about aspects of science fiction, with Matthew McConaughey’s Joseph Cooper entering another dimension in which he can communicate with the past.
The space film plays around with time travel, which is a topic that Nolan is particularly interested in. Tenet also introduced some elements to do with time travel, and Inception had different layers of time within the stacked dreams. So, there’s a chance that Nolan could choose to do something similar with The Odyssey.
Indeed, if Nolan goes completely off script with The Odyssey, it will defy most people’s expectations. Cinemagoers will be preparing themselves for a historical epic and, if there are then sci-fi elements within it, they could be completely shocked. Perhaps Odysseus could even be a time traveller, trying to get back to his home in both space and time.
When Nolan released Oppenheimer in 2023, he went against his traditional conventions and opted for an accurate historical retelling. With The Odyssey, he may return to his roots and reintroduce some shock factors to keep audiences guessing. There’s a lot of potential to take the Greek myth in a completely new direction, and it would be interesting if the director included some sci-fi elements.
