As the Christmas special episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series comes out this Friday, December 11, 2020 on Disney+, the actors and the creator of the series have shared a few confidences about the second season. Let’s take a look on a season that promises to be even better than the first one according to all the cast.

What can we expect for the couple Ricky / Nini?

In an interview with ET, Joshua Bassett said that Ricky, the character he plays, and Nini (Olivia Rodrigo) will face many challenges and twists and turns in the second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Tim Federle adds: “Ricky and Nini are on the beginning of a lifelong journey of whether they stay together or eventually part together, learning what it means to go through the valleys and hills of a relationship.”

Olivia Rodrigo tells Hollywood Life: “Nini goes through a lot of changes in season 2. She is a little bit stressed out and confused. There are a lot of different balls in the air for her in season 2, so I think the audience is going to be really invested in how her story turns out. I think that she definitely grows more complex and grows more as a teenager over the course of season 2.”

“Secondary” characters even more emphasized

If season 2 will still feature incredible dance numbers and songs according to Olivia Rodrigo, it will allow us to learn even more about the characters and especially the “secondary” characters. Also note that Joe Serafini has been promoted “regular”. We should therefore see the character of Seb a little more on the screen.

Gina (Sofia Wylie), Carlos (Frankie A. Rodriguez) and Kourtney (Dara Reneé) will also be highlighted, which was requested by many fans. Proof of that is that Kourtney will have the first solo song and “that’s for a reason” says Tim Federle to The Los Angeles Times. “This is a season to allow everyone to come into their own, whether they’re […] cast in the lead or not.” The creator of the series also promises some surprises regarding the distribution of roles for the adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. On this subject, Larry Sapertstein tells Young Entertainment: “I can’t say much about Big Red’s role in the production just yet, but I think fans are going to be very pleased!”

Sofia Wylie told Hollywood Life that we should see more of the real Gina, the one behind the wall she had up. She added: “there’s just a lot of new fun relationships and dynamics that I’ve had so much fun filming because there are a lot of people that I wasn’t able to film with last season, so being able to film with more people this season has been really fun.”

The second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will also show another aspect of EJ as Matt Cornett said: “people are going to start to get to see a little bit of a different side of EJ, which will be really, really cool. EJ got himself in trouble in season 1, and I think it’ll be fun to kind of get to see a different side of himself and see him figure it all out.” Will he finally understand Ashlyn’s (Julia Lester‘s) comments about him? It’s very likely, given what the actor said.

A possible Gina / EJ relationship during season 2?

Asked about this by Hollywood Life, Matt Cornett, EJ’s interpreter, gave his thoughts on the subject: “I think the cool thing about EJ and Gina is they’re different, but they’re similar. They’re both struggling with something similar in the way of Gina’s always trying to figure out where she’s going next with her mom always having to move with the work she’s in, and Gina always having to go with her. EJ is kind of going through the same thing in season 2 with being a second-semester senior and just trying to figure out what’s next for him… I think it would be really, really fun to explore. At the beginning of season one, I was like, at some point, there’s no way that Ricky and Nini get together and something doesn’t happen with EJ and Gina. There was always that hint of something whenever they were conniving and scheming with different things.”

Olivia Rodrigo has written a new original song

If we already knew that Joshua Bassett had written an original song for this second season (The Perfect Gift), it is also the case of Olivia Rodrigo. The interpreter of Nini had already done so during the first season with All I Want. And with success since the song was certified Gold in several countries and was ranked in the Billboard Hot 100 after its release. Tim Federle told the Los Angeles Times that the song is “pretty extraordinary“.

In an interview with ET, Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett confirmed that for this second season they hadn’t written any four-handed songs. Olivia suggests that this could be the case in the next season, if there is one.

A first preview of season 2 with Something in the Air

Season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will feature an incredible dance number that will be used to inaugurate the instagram page of East High School’s drama club. Tim Federle talked about this particular scene in an interview: “I said to our amazing choreographer, Zach Woodlee, ‘What if our way back into Season 2 is to really open with a bang, give everybody a solo and just never stop the camera moving’. It was a really fun, high-risk number to do, because all it takes is one person tripping, and you have to start over. And I’m really proud of how it turned out.”
